August 1944. Charles de Gaulle takes triumphal steps down the Champs-Élysées, knowing that no one would dare to question his authority after liberating the country. However, within a few months, as partisan quarrels took over, De Gaulle abruptly announced his resignation. Thus began for de Gaulle what history will call the "crossing of the desert"- twelve years of solitude and bitterness. Fortunately, the writing of his Memoirs occupies the General on a daily basis.
