The story takes place in Paris, in 1876. Godeuil is a young medical student who lives in the Latin Quarter. His neighbor is a sympathetic but enigmatic man, Mr. Mechinet. One evening, Mr. Mechinet knocks on Godeuil's door and, injured, asks for help. Godeuil does not know the cause of the injury, but has the necessary knowledge to come to the aid of his unhappy visitor. And so, the advanture begins...
